The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the explosion in gaming looks especially strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
