Debunking Venezuelan Celebration Videos and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.

Synthetic pictures purporting to depict Venezuela's president under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have garnered countless of impressions across the internet.

The Way Fake Pictures of Maduro Appeared Rapidly

Initial fabricated synthetic picture seemingly showing him led off a aircraft circulated within hours. This image was unpublished by any authoritative US channels; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

We’ve checked the SynthID tool, determining the picture was generated or edited with AI tools.

Further synthetic pictures started circulating in the following period, appearing to show different views of the leader in custody. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures show they originated from an Instagram account called ultravfx.

The detection tool confirms all of these pictures were similarly generated or edited AI technology.

Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted

Donald Trump shared the genuine photograph of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was made public, synthetic pictures kept circulating but were altered to incorporate the grey athletic wear worn by Maduro.

Digital forensics show these altered fabrications were initially shared on the video platform by a digital art profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector says the new graphics were created or altered AI tools.
